UEFA opens new dialogue with sports brands on kit regulations

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has entered into a dialogue with sports brands over proposed revision of the regulations for teams’ kits.

New proposals include several recommendations to clarify the use of decorative elements on kits and undergarments. Other ideas include calls for consistency in the measurement of sponsor branding.

Another issue that came up for discussion was the question of colour vision deficiency, which affects an estimated 220 million people across the world. Kit design can make life difficult for football fans who suffer from the genetic condition, often making it more difficult for them to follow a match or choose replica kit they want to buy.

The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), which accompanied brands to a meeting with UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland, on November 29, said afterwards that regulations governing football kits are “a crucial component of the sporting goods industry” because any changes that UEFA makes affects the production and manufacturing cycles of the sports brands who make the shirts, shorts and socks.
