Bemis adds bonding solutions for nylon and natural fibres

Sew-free bonding technology provider Bemis Associates has launched new products to work with nylon and natural fibres, called, respectively, Nylock and the Terra collection. These products were on display at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market exhibition in Salt Lake City (January 10-12).

Nylock adheres to smooth surfaces and finishes as both an adhesive and functional aesthetic film, Bemis explained, describing it as “an unprecedented bonding solution for tightly woven and lightweight fabrics”. It said Uniqlo is one of the first brands to invest in the technology, using it to achieve a new method of construction for bonded baffles, reducing cold spots and eliminating the loss of down fill.

In the Terra collection, Bemis is making available sew-free bonding solutions that can be applied to natural materials, minimising garment weight and maintaining breathability. Products include a solution specifically formulated for wool, cotton, and cellulose fibre, and Terratec, which allows the addition of functional detail to heavier materials, including fleece and thicker fabrics that are traditionally hard to bond, the company said. The collection also includes Exoflex, which stretches along with performancewear fabrics.

Bemis chief executive, Steve Howard, said at the time of the launch that his company’s new products “have tamed two fabric categories that previously posed a major challenge to the industry, without having to compromise aesthetic for performance, or vice-versa”.
