Two brands sign up to use Ecotec in garments

Biella-based cotton yarn manufacturer Marchi & Fildi has said that the Ecotec range of yarns it launched 18 months ago now has seven accredited partners and has secured several certifications, most recently that of the Italian health ministry’s Tessile e Salute, to add to others including those of Oeko-Tex, the Global Recycled Standard and ISO ISO 9000:2008.

Crucially, two brands are now using Ecotec, which the yarn manufacturer describes as “the first smart cotton yarns made in Italy”.

Marchi & Fildi’s production process for making Ecotec yarns is exclusive, traceable and certified, the company has said. It centres on transforming pre-dyed textile clippings into a 100% cotton yarn with important savings in water and energy consumption. It offers improvements of up to 55% in greenhouse gas emissions, up to 55% in energy consumption and of almost 80% in terms of water usage.

Finnish design company Marimekko has used Ecotec yarn in a jersey series called Stripe 15. It has said it is always on a lookout for new sustainable materials.

US fashion company Eileen Fisher has also used Ecotec, in this case in a poncho. On introducing Ecotec to its consumers, Eileen Fisher said: “Spun from garments or cutting-room scraps, recycled and reclaimed cotton yarns have a speckly, mélange effect. The environmental advantage is that they eliminate farming, harvesting and ginning, reducing both energy and transportation needs.”
