LEAP Technology works with German partner on new wearable sensors

Wearable sensors could soon contain silicones from Munich-based chemicals manufacturer. It is working with Danish company LEAP Technology to develop electronic components that can be incorporated as sensors discreetly into textiles. LEAP has already won several technology awards for its development work.

So-called dielectric electroactive polymers (EAPs) are at the heart of these sensors. LEAP Technology is developing ways to make these out of flexible silicone film from Wacker. The ultra-thin high-precision film is embedded between two conductive electrodes made of carbon-black-filled silicone. Conductive silicone rubber that LEAP uses for the electrodes also comes from Wacker. Together, the three layers form a flexible capacitor that can store electrical charge.
