Consultancy calls on textile firms to take part in microplastics exercise

The European Commission has appointed Bristol-based environmental consultancy Eunomia to lead a study quantifying losses of microplastics from various sources, including clothes and textiles, and investigating options to reduce losses to the aquatic environment.

Eunomia has said it is keen to receive input from retailers, manufacturers and trade associations of textiles and clothes for the new project and has invited companies in the industry to take part in a public consultation exercise it has set up.

Microplastics (in principle pieces of material smaller than 5 millimetres) are of particular concern, Eunomia has said. European authorities and consumers have become increasingly worried about the transfer of contaminants from the marine environment to sea-food and microplastics are among the “contaminants of emerging concern”.

Project director, Chris Sherrington, said on announcing the development: “It is clear that action needs to be taken to reduce the amount of plastic entering the environment each year. It’s important that all potential measures are considered in the light of the best available evidence, in order to achieve improved environmental outcomes in the most cost-effective and equitable way.”
