Time for textiles to do “much better” Gunter Pauli says

Estimates by consultancy McKinsey suggest that producing one kilo of fabric generates on average 23 kilos of greenhouse gases. Quoting McKinsey, The Economist said in a recent report that consumers these days also keep most clothes for only half as long as they did 15 years ago.

Added to that, it said global clothing production doubled between the start of this century and 2014 and it highlighted fast-fashion brand Zara as one of the leaders of change, moving the world of apparel from a few collections per year to 20 now.

Reacting to the report in The Economist, circular economy and environmental production campaigner Dr Gunter Pauli said the textile industry, as it operates today, “is like tobacco and mercury”. He referred to current models of production and consumption as toxic and exploitative. “It’s time to do much better,” he said.
