As well as being an experienced climber, Mr Steck also held several records for solo and speed climbing.
In 2010, he joined Waterproof technology provider OutDry as a technical advisor. He worked closely with OutDry and Italian brand Scarpa on a range of technical mountaineering footwear known as Phantom. He had also been long sponsored by outdoor apparel brand Mountain Hardwear.
Mr Steck was the subject of WSA Magazine’s ‘Focus on Winners’ article in April 2010. In the article, he expressed his life-long passion for outdoor activities and sports and emphasised to WSA the importance of the equipment he uses during his expeditions. To ensure they meet the required standards, he would work closely with the companies producing them, providing invaluable feedback that contributed to product development.
