Luxury group Kering and Swedish clothing retailer H&M are among the companies to have signed up the Fashion Positive PLUS, an initiative that aim to accelerate the development of safer, circular materials for use in the apparel industry.

The initiative is run by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to change the way things are manufactured so that the processes are kinder to the planet.

The founding members, including Kering and H&M, met ahead of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit on May 11 to discuss the “building block” materials, such as fibres, yarns, finishings, trims and dyes, that they will collaboratively work to optimise for material health, safety and circularity.

“The aim of Fashion Positive PLUS is to convene some of the biggest brands and brightest design innovators in the world to collaborate on accelerating the optimisation and availability of positive, circular building block materials for the fashion industry,” explained Annie Gullingsrud, director of the textiles and apparel sector for the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.

“Through PLUS, we think we can achieve a whole range of circular materials that we can put into the market within a very short time, including yarns, fabrics and trimmings,” added Cecilia Strömblad-Brännsten, H&M Circular Lead.
