Small outdoor firm will continue to call its jacket ‘Glencoe’

The National Trust for Scotland, a conservation charity, has admitted it made a mistake in trying to prevent a small outdoor clothing company from using the name ‘Glencoe’ for a jacket.

Hilltrek Outdoor Clothing, based in Aboyne near Aberdeen, has used the name ‘Glencoe’ for an outdoor jacket made from high-end cotton, calling it after a famous place in the Scottish Highlands where the National Trust runs a visitor centre.

Both organisations have now come to an agreement and Hilltrek’s use of the name will continue. This came only after the company received a letter from lawyers telling it to stop using ‘Glencoe’ to describe the product. The National Trust for Scotland later said it had not realised Hilltrek was an established Scottish company that had been using the name for some years.
