IAC argues that textile antimicrobial testing is no longer adequate

Not-for-profit organisation the International Antimicrobial Council (IAC) has announced a free webinar in which two experts on the subject of antimicrobial functionality in textiles will address the subject of testing the effectiveness of the solutions already on the market.

Speakers at the online event, which will take place at midday New York time on September 28, will be Dr Bob Monticello, a textile microbiologist who works for the IAC, and Dr Lou Protonentis, a textile chemist who works for textile technology provider Noble Biomaterials.

They will say that, although antimicrobial agents have, for many years, been added to textiles to control the growth of unwanted bacteria for the prevention of odours, the test methods that have been developed to measure microbiological performance in the laboratory may no longer meet the textile industry’s requirements.

Many of the current test methods were written years ago and may not yield the most important data textile and apparel companies need to produce the best products, the IAC will argue.
