Patagonia plays a part in new organic cotton certification programme
Outdoor brand Patagonia’s commitment to organic cotton continues. The company has only used organic cotton in its cotton products since 1996 and has worked with specialist Pennsylvania-based organic farming research body the Rodale Institute to create a dedicated certification programme called Regenerative Organic Certification.

Announcing the new certification programme in mid-September, the Rodale Institute said: “The new Regenerative Organic Certification, a co-operative effort among a coalition of farmers, ranchers, non-profits, scientists, and brands establishes a new, high-bar standard for regenerative organic agriculture. Owned by this coalition, the standard will be administered by NSF International and is open to many certification partners. The standard encompasses guidelines for soil health and land management, animal welfare, and farmer and worker fairness.”

Patagonia’s position is that organic farming uses nature-based solutions to manage pests and build healthy soil, instead of the synthetic pesticides, herbicides, defoliants, fertilisers and genetically modified seeds used to grow conventional cotton.
