Fair trade helps workers directly, Patagonia says

Outdoor brand Patagonia has issued a message extolling the virtues of fair trade garments, partly to promote elements in its current collection that have fair trade status, but also to drive home to customers that fair trade makes an important direct impact on garment workers across the world.

Better Sweater and Synchilla Snap-T fleeces are among the Patagonia products that are certified fair trade. Every purchase of these garments sends money back to factory workers, which they can take as cash or, if they prefer, devote to community projects.

Than Win Tun, an industrial engineer and fair trade representative at Thai garment manufacturer VT, has told Patagonia that fair trade “honours workers” and provides a mechanism for sharing profits from sales directly with the people who make the clothes.
