Additional brands commit to using 100% sustainable cotton by 2025

More than 20 leading clothing and textile brands, including Burberry, Adidas and Timberland, have added their names to a pledge to use 100% sustainable cotton by 2025.

The news was announced at the annual Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference, which took place in Washington DC on October 11. The event brought together more than 400 textile and apparel leaders to discuss the most important sustainability issues facing the industry.

It brings the number of major brands and retailers to have signed the pledge, which is known as the sustainable cotton communiqué, to 36.

The Textile Exchange said the addition of these new partners demonstrates the demand for sustainable cotton. It added that the commitment of these brands would help alleviate the environmental and social costs often associated with cotton production such as the over-use of pesticides, the releases of greenhouse gases, the depletion of local water sources and rising costs of production.
