German government funds new project to reduce ocean plastic

Vaude chief executive Antje von Dewitz spoke recently of her concerns surrounding “the disastrous effects on marine life” of plastic pollution in the oceans, some of it from garments made from polyester and other synthetic fibres, which can release small particles of plastic during washing.

She also revealed that Vaude is one of the sports companies to have founded a joint project in Germany earlier this autumn. Called TextileMission, the new project has funding of €1.7 million from Germany’s federal ministry of education and research and has the aim of helping brands reduce the release of micro-plastic particles from clothing made from synthetic fibre.

In total nine organisations are part of the project, including Polartec, adidas and German sporting goods industry association BSI, as well as Vaude. Washing machine manufacturer Miele is taking part too, as is detergent manufacturer Henkel. Representatives of academia and campaign groups make up the other project partners.
