Bangladeshi group to open garment factory in Ethiopia

Textile group DBL has received the go-ahead from the government in its home country, Bangladesh, to invest $9.5 million in a new garment factory in Ethiopia. The new facility will employ 1,700 people. It will start producing finished garments in April 2018.

In recent comments to media in Asia, DBL managing director, Mohammed Abdul Jabbar, said the main attraction of setting up a factory in Ethiopia was its duty-free access to the US market through the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act.

Two years ago, Bangladesh’s government changed the rules about capital leaving the country and Bangladeshi companies setting up new factories overseas. It considers applications on a case-by-case basis and DBL’s Ethiopia project is one of those it has approved. Reports say around 50% of applications are still being rejected.
