The European Union’s programme for education and training, now called Erasmus+, has included sport since 2014. As a result, there has been support from the European Commission for sports partnerships, not-for-profit sports events, research projects and other activity aimed at promoting sport.

In 2016, the focus of this support was specifically on grassroots sport in an attempt to increase the level of participation in sport and physical activity. The European Commission set aside a budget of €34.1 million for this.
