Report puts spotlight on gender equality in the outdoor industry

29/01/2018
A report commissioned by Camber Outdoors, formerly known as The Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition, has shed light on how much progress has been made when it comes to putting more women in leadership positions in the outdoor industry.

In 2015, Camber Outdoors launched its CEO Pledge, which saw a number of outdoor companies pledge to increase leadership opportunities for women. Since then, more than 75 outdoor companies, including the likes of Burton, WL Gore, Patagonia, REI and Arc’teryx, have committed to making attracting, retaining and advancing more women a central part of their business strategy.

In a follow up to this initiative, the report, released by global executive firm Heidrick and Struggles, features a transcription of a roundtable discussion involving four leading outdoor industry executives: Donna Carpenter, CEO of Burton; Sally McCoy, former CEO of CamelBak; Jerry Stritzke, CEO of REI Co-op and Jim Weber, CEO of Brooks Running Company.

They touch on a range of issues during their discussion, including the internal policies their companies have adopted to recruit women and help them progress up the corporate ladder; how attitudes towards women in the outdoor industry have changed; the impact of the Camber Outdoors CEO Pledge; and what the future holds for women in leadership in the outdoor industry.
