Workers feel the benefit of fair-trade garments

Workers in a garment factory in Mexico are placing the additional payments they receive for making certified fair-trade garments for Patagonia into a common fund and are administering the money themselves through a democratically elected workers’ committee.

Employees of the Hong Ho textile group in Mexico revealed details of the arrangement in a video that Patagonia has published to highlight the benefits to workers of its fair-trade products.

In the video, a number of workers in Mexico and in Asia speak about the importance of producing garments with fair-trade status, saying it makes them feel they and their skills are being valued. In the case of those in Mexico, the workers make it clear they are very happy to have the extra money and explain that they view the workers’ committee as the best way to distribute it.

Among the fair-trade products they make for Patagonia is the Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover. One of the workers in the video says consumers buying these products should stop and think that they may be helping not just individual garment workers, but families and perhaps even entire communities.
