Turkey talks of taking retaliatory action against US cotton

As tensions built up in early March with regard to trade and tariffs around the world, senior figures in Turkey began to talk about increasing duties on imports of US cotton in retaliation against US proposals for tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Reuters quoted a senior adviser on the economy to the Turkish government, Cemil Ertem, as saying cotton could be one of the products that Turkey will earmark for reciprocal measures. He said countries affected by the imposition of new tariffs by the US, “starting with Turkey”, are preparing to respond in kind.

Turkey’s textile industry supplies international sports brands including adidas and Nike. In 2016, it imported more than $500 million worth of US cotton, Reuters reported, saying the figure comes from the Turkish Statistical Institute.
