An academic at the University of British Columbia, Professor Mark MacLachlan, has said he believes he is close to creative a range of sustainable, renewable and biodedgradable materials that could replace plastics.

Professor MacLachlan is working with waste from the seafood industry to develop the materials from the chitin in shells.

In recent comments, he said: “Shells are a large waste product from the food industry, shrimp shells and crab shells especially. But the chemistry needed to transform them into something useful is not too difficult.”
