The winners of the 2018 Théophile Legrand International Awards for Textile Innovation have been named.

First prize went to Neda Shah Hosseini, a doctoral student from Iran who is studying at the University of Haute Alsace in Mulhouse. She won €8,000 for her work on electrospun textile ‘scaffolds’ for nerve-repair applications.

A second prize, with a value of €7,000, went to Dr Zuzana Hrubosov from the University of Liberec in the Czech Republic for her work on using 3D printing techniques to translate clothing label information into braille.

This year’s competition is the ninth edition of the awards, set up by the Théophile Legrand Foundation in 2009. Its aim is to celebrate and reward creative and innovative textile research that has real potential to make an impact in industrial applications. It is named after the man who was the driving force behind the growth of the textile industry in northern France in the nineteenth century, especially in the town of Fourmies.
