Film of Reinhold Messner’s Everest ascent nears completion

Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner, the first climber to reach the summit of Everest without oxygen bottles, has said a film commemorating the event is close to completion. In the film, called The Last Step, Mr Messner is played by his son, Simon.

He completed the climb in 1978 and went on to become the first climber to reach the summit of all 14 of the world’s 8,000-metre-plus mountains.

In an interview with an Italian newspaper to help launch the film, Reinhold Messner said he believes “respectful mountain-climbing” is sustainable and good, but he made it clear he is much less keen on what he calls “excessive development”, including heli-skiing and snow-mobiles.

He complained that lowering the cost and level of difficulty of extreme climbing can sometimes prove to be “a disaster”. Once he abandoned an expedition to climb Gasherbrum II on the border between Pakistan and China because there were too many people at the base-camp.
