Oeko-Tex now requires extra test for GMO in organic cotton
05/04/2018
One of these most recent changes means textiles made of organic cotton or with organic cotton parts must undergo an additional laboratory test for genetically modified organisms (GMO). The laboratory test will prove whether or not genetic engineering has been applied to the cotton materials used.
Organic labels currently available on the market exclude the use of GMO, however they do not require any obligatory laboratory tests or only require random tests on the cotton seed as proof of this. Oeko-Tex has said it wants to provide greater certainty in this area for product suppliers and consumers.
The Zurich-based organisation has said its updating of its standards and guidelines is based on “a continual exchange of experiences with stakeholders”.
