Not-for-profit organisation EuropeActive and consultancy Deloitte have published details of a new market research study on the health and fitness market in Europe. The study is the result of research the two carried out jointly at the end of 2017.

On presenting the results at the European Health & Fitness Forum in Cologne, Deloitte partner Karsten Hollasch said the European health and fitness market continued to grow strongly in 2017 as the total number of health and fitness club members increased by 4% to about 60 million people.

With a membership growth of 5.3% to 10.6 million participants, Germany strengthened its position as the country with the highest membership ahead of the UK (9.7 million), France (5.7 million), Italy (5.3 million) and Spain (5.2 million).

Total fitness club revenues in 2017 were €26.6 billion, which represents an increase of 3.8% compared to 2016.
