A senior representative of the Hohenstein Institute in North America, Melinda Salter, has said consumers in the US are now responding enthusiastically to eco-labels on products in retail stores.

Speaking at the Showtime fabrics event in High Point, North Carolina, on June 5, Ms Salter said the inclusion of a quick response code on her organisation’s Oeko-Tex hang-tags is proving popular with consumers, who can use their smart phones to scan the code and find out all the information they need on a fabric or a product before deciding whether or not to buy it.

“Consumers love it,” she said. “I always try to be neutral about this and I’m not saying this only applies to the Oeko-Tex label. Whatever labels you can put on your product, you should put them on because consumers are very keent o see these labels and to have the information.”
