Beaulieu sees results from container transport changes
26/06/2018
The company initiated this programme in 2015, aiming to reduce its dependency on truck transport in favour of moving more containers via waterways. Now, 60% of its output by container is transported via barges at the River Terminal Wielsbek (RTW), from which they can reach the Port of Antwerp. From here, the company is able to access major shipping routes around the world.
Prior to this change, Beaulieu’s container cargo was transported the 90km to the port by truck. By changing to water transport, it has also saved on journey time due to avoiding traffic congestion on the roads.
The company is aiming to increase its use of barges to transport containers by 10% in 2018. It wants to achieve a further 55% reduction in CO2 emissions in the coming years through this change to its logistical operations.
Beaulieu’s chief operating officer, Luc Speecke, said: “Even though this sustainability programme is primarily the responsibility of our transport and logistics departments, we believe its success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our entire organisation, and this philosophy carries through to the other sustainability programmes that we are currently investigating and testing. If these programmes prove to be as successful as we expect, we will shortly roll them out across the entire company.”
