The latest data from specialist research group NPD shows that the core US outdoor industry’s sales for the year ended April 2018 were $18.9 billion, a drop of 4% compared to the previous year.

This figure includes sales of outdoor equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories.

During the year to April, outerwear was the largest category in the outdoor market, generating $3 billion in sales, an increase of 3% compared to the previous year. Within this category, sales of tops increased 4%, driven by the performance of jackets and vests.

Matt Powell, vice president and senior industry advisor for sports at The NPD Group, said: “Outerwear is a huge chunk of the outdoor business. The long winter was the primary sales driver in the first few months of 2018, leaving inventories clean. The category is also faring well with its assortment of looks and brands, and its versatility as consumers prefer to invest in products that they can layer or use in a variety of conditions.”
