As part of this expansion is will offer local sample collection and complimentary courier service to its Softlines laboratory in Guatemala City. It will also have dedicated experts stationed in the Dominican Republic for the inspection of softgoods products like garments and home textiles.
The Intertek Guatemala laboratory has recently added new restricted substance testing for a range of dyes, short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and heavy metals. It now also offers high-performance fabric testing services, such as for drying rate, anti-bacterial properties and water vapour permeability.
The company has said this allows it to provide “best-in-class testing services for textiles and footwear products produced throughout the entire Latin America region.”
At the time of the announcement, Intertek’s regional director for Softlines in Latin America, Rudy Semrau, said Haiti and the Dominican Republic have become “key sourcing countries” for US brands and retailers due to the passage of recent trade bills granting duty-free access to the US market for Haitian textiles and apparel products.
“We see tremendous growth potential in the region and our expansion in this region is an important step in further reinforcing Intertek’s position as a leading total quality assurance partner to Latin America’s textiles and apparel industry,” he added.
