Thai industrial group Indorama looks set to expand its PET recycling capabilities after agreeing to acquire French company Sorepla Industrie, one of the largest plastic recyclers in Europe.

Sorepla’s plastic recycling facility is located in Neufchâteau in northeastern France. It consists of three production lines: recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), recycled high density polyethylene (rHDPE) and food-grade pellets. Its combined capacity is 52,000 tonnes per year.

Indorama said the acquisition is in line with its aim to be sustainable in the long term. It also opens up new opportunities to serve increasing demand for food grade rPET, it added.

Commenting on the acquisition, Aloke Lohia, CEO of Indorama said: “Indorama Ventures plays a key role in promoting the circular economy and environmental sustainability globally. We believe that the recycling of PET packaging is one of the most responsible solutions for the preservation of resources and the reduction of PET containers in landfills.”
