Vietnam’s textile sector on course for strong year

06/08/2018
The managing director of the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), Cao Huu Hieu, has said the country’s garment and textile sector is on course to surpass its export target for 2018.

Vinatex announced in January that the target for this year was $34 billion.

Speaking at a press conference in Hanoi, Mr Cao said Vietnam’s garment and textile exports in the first half of the year were worth $16.5 billion, 16.49% higher than the previous year. The organisation expects exports to reach $18.5 billion in the second half of the year, resulting in full-year export turnover of $35 billion.

He attributed this strong performance to the fact that many Vietnamese companies have received bulk orders stretching to the end of 2018.

Mr Cao stressed, however, that to achieve the strong second half Vinatex predicts companies will have to invest in Industry 4.0 technology and in improving the skills of their workers. He also urged them to improve the quality and design of their products.
