Higg Index encourages upstream communication

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) has announced an update to the Higg Index, which it says will allow companies around the world to more effectively assess the environmental impact of the materials they use and so design more sustainable products.

The update includes a new feature that enables suppliers to share sustainability performance information about their materials with brands and retailers. The SAC believes this upstream communication will promote greater transparency and improver sustainability performance throughout the industry.

"With the opportunity to play a key role in determining a product's sustainability performance, being a designer today is really exciting," said Jason Kibbey, SAC chief executive. "With the Higg MSI, product designers can access an incredible amount of information, and then use it to significantly reduce environmental impacts of materials production.”

He added that the SAC has been approached by other industries about using the Higg Index. “This has made us realise there is an opportunity to expand the tool's application in the coming months," he said.
