VTT to raise €3 million for ocean plastic-eating microbe trial

Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre wants to carry out trials on the Baltic Sea of an idea that uses microbes to dispose of plastic waste in the oceans. It said a feasibility study to prove the concept has yielded good results and confirmed it now wants to raise €3 million in new funding to carry out this wider trial.

VTT has said it has identified microbes that can consume a variety of plastics, including polypropylene and PET, and convert them into ethanol and other products.
