The organiser of Intertextile Shanghai, Messe Frankfurt, has said it does not believe the trade war between the US and China will detract from the international character of future editions of the twice-yearly exhibition.

Speaking at the autumn event at the end of September, Olaf Schmidt, vice-president for the textile and textile technologies division of Messe Frankfurt, said the profile of the exhibitors at the event, who represented 33 different countries and territories on this occasion, and of the buyers who visit was necessarily international and would remain so.

He said: “We are a global company and we believe in free trade. It’s not such an easy situation at the moment and some of our exhibitions are already being affected by the trade dispute. We are not taking sides; we always speak up for free trade and we cannot do any more than that.”

Preliminary figures for day one of September’s Intertextile Shanghai showed a 6% increase in visitor numbers, reaching 31,000 for the day.
