Joint venture proposes new solution for textile waste

The two companies have established a joint venture, to be known as Intrinsic Advanced Materials, which will work to commercialise Intrinsic’s patent pending CiCLO technology.
CiCLO is said to allow polyester and other synthetic materials to biodegrade in the same way that natural materials do. This is achieved through a biomimetic process that is only activated under prolonged exposure to moisture, high heat and microbes, conditions found in wastewater treatment plants and anaerobic landfill sites.
Intrinsic has said apparel brands will be able to easily implement the technology at the manufacturing level in order to reduce microfibre pollution during washing and to minimise the amount of plastic that accumulates in landfills as a result of discarded textiles.
Charles Heilig, president and CEO of Parkdale Textile Division, said: “We’re confident that CiCLO is the best solution for synthetic microfibre pollution and unrecycled textile waste. The joint venture is a strategic fit, leveraging each company’s strengths, and represents Parkdale’s commitment to continual innovation for our customers.”
For his part, Andrea Ferris, CEO of the new entity Intrinsic Advanced Materials, said Parkdale had contributed “considerable resources and expertise” to the project. He added that this new partnership offers a “powerful opportunity” to scale up the CiCLO solution.
