Hurricane “took an exceptional toll” on Georgia’s cotton crop

Advocacy organisation the Georgia Cotton Commission has said that Hurricane Michael, which passed through Georgia on October 10 and 11, “wreaked havoc” in the state and “took an exceptional toll” on its agricultural economy, especially the cotton crop.

In some locations, producers have said their entire crop is damaged or even lost.

“It is without question that losses will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars,” the organisation said. “Those losses will extend well beyond the farm, as cotton gins, other agribusinesses and rural communities will feel the ripples of Hurricane Michael’s aftermath for years to come.”
