Wisher develops moisture-sensitive smart fabric

One of the most interesting innovations on show at the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (Titas) came courtesy of local fabric manufacturer Wisher.

At the exhibition, the company had on display its BreaXtile smart fabric, a moisture-responsive material with self-ventilating flaps that keep the wearer cool. The flaps open automatically in response to sweat being released and close again once  moisture is no longer detected.

Wisher has patented this technology in China and in Taiwan, with further patent applications having already been filed in Europe and the US.

It is designed primarily for use in sportswear, and must be in the baselayer as this is the clothing that comes in contact with the wearer’s body, allowing the fabric to serve its function.

The company admits that there are still a few deficiencies concerning the fabric. Chief among these is that cutting the flaps in the material weakens the overall strength of the garment. The technology is only in the second phase of its development, so Wisher is still working hard to solve this issue. It would also like to make the fabric more lightweight.
