The partners aim to recycled 20 million tennis balls in the US over the next three years.
“This program with RecycleBalls gives our brand and players a truly viable way to make our communities and our sport better,” said Kyle Schlegel, global marketing director of Wilson’s racquet sports division. “We chose to work with the RecycleBalls team as their passion for sustainability in the game matched our own, and they have spent the past several years building a strong infrastructure, operations system, and outreach programs to make recycling and repurposing tennis balls a reality.”
RecycleBalls was launched in 2014 by Derrick Senior. The company processes tennis balls at its facility in Vermont. There, the felt is removed and the balls are ground into a crumb rubber mixture that RecycleBalls refers to as ‘Green-Gold’. This mixture is then provided to partner organisations for use in new products, such as tennis courts.
One company using the rubber mixture for this purpose is sports surface manufacturer Sport Group, which recently signed up as a partner organisation. It will use the recycle tennis ball material in its Laykold Masters tennis courts.
