A delegation from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) paid a visit in mid-November to one of the biorefineries created by Italian start-up Novamont.

The company’s specialism is to combine agriculture and chemistry; it has created biorefineries in a number of agricultural communities in Italy to allow farmers to turn crop waste into useful new materials, including bioplastics.

For the FAO visit, it showed delegates its plant at Terni in Umbria. It included a demonstration of the production process for generating Mater-Bi, Novamont’s range of biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.
