Czech-made lighting solutions on display in Munich

Czech Republic-based company Scilif used the Performance Days exhibition (November 28-29) to display its LED piping solutions for sports and safety clothing.

The company employs specially designed light-conductive polymer fibres that are encased in a textile material so that they can be easily integrated into a garment. It refers to this technology as Sunfiber.

The fibres take their light from a powerful, built-in LED bulb. Scilif has said they can give the wearer visibility of up to five kilometres in clear conditions. The light is evenly diffused across the whole length of the piping, offering the best possible visibility to the wearer.

The lighting is operated via a small control unit that can be concealed within the garment. From here, the wearer can set the lighting level. It is powered by a removable battery that can be charged easily via a micro USB connection. When the control unit is removed, the garment is completely washable.

Scilif has told sportstextiles that there are a number applications for its technology. This includes outdoor activities in the dark such as cycling or running, as well as a variety of uses in the workwear and safety garment industry.

Another application it mentioned was in clothing for police officers. It revealed that it has adapted the operating method so that the officer can activate the light by tapping a panel on their arm. This makes it easier to use in an emergency situation.
