FESI wants concrete actions to promote sport

FESI, the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry, has called on the governments of European Union member states to develop “real strategies” for promoting sports activity among their citizens.

EU heads of state met at the end of November and gave recognition to the benefits of sport to societies and economies as a major driver of growth and jobs and a means for improving health and social conditions.

In welcoming the statement, FESI said governments must put pressure on local authorities in cities and regions across Europe to take concrete action to promote sports and outdoor activity.

In recent comments, FESI president, Frank Dassler, said: “Sport is the image of a healthy society. It should be seen as an investment and not as a cost. Therefore, sport is a unique sector that has the power to positively leverage many aspects of a society: health, wellbeing, economic dimension, innovation, healthcare spending, and social inclusion. Any barriers to the development of that sector should be overcome.”
