FESI hails EU-Japan deal as good news for ski boots

The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) has issued a statement to welcome a vote at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on December 12 to approve an economic partnership agreement between the European Union and Japan.

Once in force, this new agreement will create a trade zone of 600 million people, cover a third of global gross domestic product and about 40% of global trade. It will eventually remove almost all customs duties, worth roughly €1 billion a year at the moment,

FESI president, Frank Dassler, said in response to the news: “Five years after the official launch of the negotiations, FESI is pleased that the European Parliament has given its consent to this trade agreement, which will significantly increase trade between the EU and Japan. FESI has been very active in making sure that footwear quotas and import duties on ski boots are continuously part of the negotiations and we are proud that we have succeeded.”

The ski boot industry currently faces a 27% import duty in Japan and 17% in Europe, which means that European ski boot companies are paying almost €20 million in import duty every year. FESI’s ski committee chairman, Rene Harrer, said removing almost all tariffs on these goods would constitute “a real breath of fresh air for our sector and for Japanese consumers purchasing European-made ski boots”.
