Tree-free rayon idea ready to leave the lab

Australian biomaterial technology company Nanollose has created a sweater from coconut waste, calling it “a breakthrough for an industry that is urgently seeking sustainable alternatives” because  it’s made from tree-free rayon. Reflecting the non-tree source, it has called the fibre Nularbor.

Managing director, Alfie Germano, said on announcing the development: “We didn’t have to cut down any trees to create this sweater, and we have now demonstrated that our tree-free rayon fibre can be used in the same way as other commonly-used fibres to make clothing and textiles.”

He said Nanollose believes itself to be the only company producing tree-free rayon fibres from waste and that the technology is now ready to move from the laboratory to the factory. It is setting up supply chain links to take waste material from the Indonesian coconut industry and believes it can “significantly increase fibre production” over the next three-to-six months.

Integrating Nularbor into the clothing supply chain will require no retrofitting to existing machinery or processes, Mr Germano said.
