Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety signs off after five years
17/12/2018
The alliance formed for a fixed term of five years in 2013 in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster that year, in which 1,134 textile workers lost their lives and another 2,500 were injured. Its members include VF Corporation, Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, Target, Fruit of the Loom, Gap and other clothing retailers and brands.
In the course of these five years, the alliance has helped 428 garment factories in Bangladesh establish corrective action plans to avoid fatalities and injuries in the event of emergency situations in buildings. It has also helped 1.6 million garment workers learn how to protect themselves in the event of a fire.
It has also trained 28,000 security guards in fire safety and emergency evacuation procedures and set up a confidential helpline for workers and 181 worker safety committees have been formed, giving workers a seat at the table with management in resolving safety issues within their factories.
