UK sports retailer opens Bucharest office

Employers’ organisation the Confederation of British Industry has said one in five companies in the UK is already preparing for exit from the European Union (EU) without a specific deal on relations between the UK and the other 27 EU member states. The UK is scheduled to leave the EU in March 2019 and, so far, the government there has been unable to secure agreement for a deal with the EU.

Bristol-based online action sports retailer FreestyleXtreme is one of the companies to have made provision for a no-deal exit. Managing director, Shaun Loughlin, told the BBC that he has had to open an office in Bucharest, Romania, and is preparing to open a new distribution centre in Germany too.

He said: “We’ve really struggled to recruit people in Bristol since the vote [to leave the EU]. Net migration has fallen to incredibly low levels. A no-deal exit will mean relocating a substantial amount of the business outside the UK.”

FreestyleXtreme employs 78 people in Bristol at the moment, many from other parts of the EU. Mr Loughlin has said a no-deal scenario will mean redundancies among that group. He said the jobs will have to remain in the EU because that’s where most of the company’s sales are. “Once we move those jobs, they will not come back,” he warned.
