Nike promises ‘the perfect fit’ with its new lacing system
17/01/2019
The issue of fit is one that Nike has been working on for a number of years. Among the innovations these efforts have spawned are its Flyknit upper construction and an “adaptive lacing” system it called HyperAdapt 1.0, which was first presented in 2016.
Now, the company has revealed Nike Adapt, a system that it believes can create custom fit through a combination of an advanced lacing system and a smartphone application. The first product to incorporate it is the Nike Adapt BB basketball shoe.
Nike has explained that when a player puts their foot in the shoe, a custom motor and gear train senses the tension needed and can adjust accordingly for the correct fit. It has said the tensile strength of the underfoot lacing is enough to secure the foot throughout a range of movement.
Using the accompanying smartphone app, the wearer can input different fit settings depending on the different stages of the game. For example, they can loosen the shoe during a timeout. They can also choose a different tightness setting for warm-ups.
Nike has said the Adapt BB shoe has undergone a “gauntlet” of tests, including impact tests, intense temperatures, and end-of-life tests. A number of high-level players, including Boston Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum, have also trialled the product at the company’s headquarters in Oregon.
