Descente has big China plans

Japanese sports brand Descente has a plan to open 1,000 stores in China, according to comments in Asian media attributed to an executive from the Itochu group, which has a stake of almost 30% in the brand.

These reports have sparked comments suggesting the Descente management team could regard such a large expansion in China as risky because of the strain it could place on its production chain.

Brand president, Masatoshi Ishimoto, is a member of the family that founded Descente in the 1930s and, according to the comments, could have concerns about the expansion into China’s effect on product quality.
