Garment factory workers lose jobs after protests

Unions representing garment workers in Bangladesh have complained that factory owners have sacked hundreds of employees in the face of strikes and protests over wages.

In mid-January, protests about rates of pay turned violent and one worker was killed in clashes with the police.

In the wake of this, the government pushed through an increase in wages and workers began to return to work on January 16. However, on arrival, they found notices on factory gates with the names and photographs of workers who had been dismissed.

Unions said 750 workers had lost their jobs. Factory managers said the real figure was closer to 400. Factory owners said they felt justified in dismissing workers whom they alleged were involved in vandalising facilities.
