Coffee can point La Rioja shoe firms towards the circular economy

La Rioja’s Centre for Footwear Technology Research (CTCR) has carried out work to test the effectiveness of used coffee grounds as an antibacterial agent in shoes. A local casual footwear brand, Natural World, has expressed an early interest in the possibilities of using coffee grounds in soles and inner soles.

CTCR has tested five different types of coffee, gathered after use from restaurants in different parts of the region of La Rioja.

Adults in Spain drink an average of between two and three cups of coffee each per day, which means the country generates 170,000 tonnes of used coffee grounds per year. CTCR has said this gives it access to an “abundant, cheap and easy-to-access resource” that can help footwear manufacturers in La Rioja move towards a circular economy model.
