‘Abundant’ local cotton supply for China, but still scope for imports

Cotton industry observers noticed “a moderate uptick” in imports into China in the first half of January. However, with uncertainties continuing over the trading relationship between China and the US, imports from Australia and, in particular, Brazil dominated.

Specialist cotton market intelligence report Cotlook has said in its most recent report that import demand in China may soon slide as “abundant local supply” from the domestic 2018-2019 cotton crop is now available to spinners.

One possibility the report mentioned is that the Chinese government will continue to import cotton to “rebalance” the quality of its reserve cotton stocks. “The considerable tranche of Brazilian cotton delivered in the past couple of months, for example, is widely rumoured to be destined for the state reserve,” it said.
