Resin accident results in surfboard made from wool

US-based surfboard brand Firewire is preparing to incorporate into its collection boards developed by Paul Barron in New Zealand.

Paul Barron was laminating his own surfboard one day and accidentally spilled some of the resin on his sweater. Fascinated by the result, he decided to build a surfboard shell out of wool and it’s this product, the WoolLight board, that Firewire is going to offer, starting in April 2019.

Mr Barron has said that, while most surfboards rely on resin and fibreglass for “structural integrity”, he has reservations about the use of fibreglass, pointing to its potential as a hazard to workers and the difficulties involved in recycling the material.

To use wool and bio-resin instead, he has insisted, reduces CO2 emissions by 40% compared to traditional construction processes and cuts emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by half.

The WoolLight board uses wool from the New Zealand Merino Wool Company.
